JS Painting Company painted a house in October with failing LP Siding. For those who don't know, LP (Louisiana Pacific) Siding is an early composite siding that ultimately failed and resulted in a class action lawsuit. The problem with LP is that moisture just destroys it. The main problems are discoloration, disintegration, and fungus. By and large, if LP is still on a house and not totally shredded, it's because it was back primed (the boards were primed on their back sides before installation).
So when we encountered a client worried about their LP siding, we had to take extra care. We had to make sure everything was properly sealed, but first we had to make sure everything was properly dried out. After cleaning the house, we checked it with a moisture meter to ensure that the moisture density was low enough. Then we went ahead with a full 2 coats of a self priming paint Sherwin Williams Emerald Satin.
We liked the Emerald. It's a good paint. Thick high build and extremely durable. We wanted something meant for longevity and Emerald fit the bill. We also elected to go with a mid sheen to allow for a more water resistant coating without making the house too sparkly.
I went back to visit with the homeowner last week, and they're very pleased with how the job is holding up.
