Phinney/Fremont Stop Sign House Exterior Aura Low Lustre Paint Review

JS Painting Company just painted a house a couple weeks ago in the phinney/woodland park/fremont area. Our client's street curves in such a way that as you're driving towards it, you're really driving straight at it. So they thought it would be a neat idea to paint it a stop sign color scheme. The problem is – when you're dealing with reds on exteriors you're usually dealing with an abundant amount of bright red colorant. Bright red and bright yellow are not well suited for exterior use because they are notorious for fading. Actually, when it comes to yellow the preferred colorant is a gold tone for exterior – it fades way less. The other issue is that when a color is really vibrant it typically is far from an product base and requires a lot of colorant which is a much softer component in paint. Ben Moore actually has a proprietary colorant called GENNEX which is zero VOC (volatile organic compound) and dries with a hard resin, but many paints still run with the universal colorant system which never truly dries hard. So working with reds is setting yourself up for trouble with coverage and longevity. The solution we went with was to go with a full prime using Ben Moore's Fresh Start Primer tinted to the true color. This helps with coverage, adhesion, and color longevity. Then we went with a thick premium paint, Ben Moore's Aura Low Lustre exterior paint. We had no problems and everything ended up looking great. The extra effort with the prime and thicker paint really paid off in general, and especially with the soffits because they were extremely worn and cracked. In the end, we experienced great results with both the Aura and the Fresh Start, and we feel they came in at competitive price points.
